Script/Plan for Institutional Research VLOG - Jamie Ellis, Candidate Number 9150

Institutions research
When I was researching various institutions, one that struck me the most as being professional and has a very upstanding reputation with documentaries was the History Channel. It has a very long list of successful documentaries such as America’s Book of Secrets, How to Command a Nuclear Sub and Marked.
Through reading their list of documentaries, they have a great variety in terms of topics of their documentaries and the fact they’ve already created a documentary series about tattoos shows me that they would have no problem about airing our documentary.
Looking through their list of documentaries, they have a lot of titles that would come across as being controversial to some people and there are some that shed light on certain subjects. This is what I imagine our documentary will be classed as. It’s controversial as tattoos are generally a subject that’s not looked on too favourably in the public eye. Some people believe that tattoos aren’t something to be proud of, that they’re not supposed to be on our bodies and this is what would be controversial about our documentary. But our documentary isn’t heavily controversial. It’s not a documentary that caters to the idea of black and white, one or the other. There are no set two sides to tattoos as it is a subject that has so many opinions and ideas inside it that it is impossible for one mind to define.  And that’s the goal of our tattoo, to show people the world of tattoos and that they’re not something to be feared or shunned.

Some examples of the documentaries that would be controversial to some people would be:
1)      How the Earth was made, which would be controversial to those who are creationists and believe that a divine creator made our world. This episode is about the San Andreas Fault, a fault line that is the cause of many earthquakes in that region of America.

2)      Chronicle of the third Reich. People such as WW2 veterans and patriots of Britain would find this documentary unsuitable and believe that something like that, that they’ve fought against and defeated and believe it was evil, they may think that we’re glorifying them by placing them on the TV.

The History Channel has already released and funded a series of documentaries about Tattoo's. The "Marked" series talks about tattoos in criminal culture and organisations. I'd like our documentary to follow a similar path in revealing tattoo meanings in the public.

Channel 4 is the next institution i've researched. They have released many documentaries throughout their channels life time. Most of these documentaries are controversial which makes them a viable candidate for my research and our documentary production.

Some of the documentaries they've produced include the recent "Skint" series, which followed around a family in scunthorpe that were poor, didn't work and tried to get money through any other means. They were shown to be rough people, with vulgar manners and behaviours.

They've also released a documentary based upon tattoo's, entitled "My Tattoo Addiction". It's a series that highlights people who go under the needle, an exploration of their motives, emotions and describes their experiences.

In my eyes, i feel that this is a reason why Channel 4 wouldn't make a suitable institution. Their documentary is too close to ours. They have practically the same objectives that they want to represent and they're simply too close together.

Our documentary wouldn't have to be aired past the water shed, due to the fact their is no bad language in it and no sexual content. I'd say around 7 would be an appropriate time for our documentary. It's a slightly controversial documentary but I'm not entirely sure we'd be given a prime time TV slot. It may be that we have to go with an earlier slot in late afternoon. It would certainly not be aired in the morning because people are out at work traditionally and our target audience would be at college/university or at work.

  1. Logo/ screen grabs and visuals are needed - uploaded video examples of the two controversial docs is essential for this post. You also need to look at Pegi and consider the time it would be aired.
